The City of Healdsburg has received permission from the Regional Water Quality Control Board to implement an urban recycled water program. This program, similar to Bay Area programs recently featured on the evening news, allows self-haulers to take recycled water for use on vegetable gardens and ornamental landscaping.
Self-haulers may take one to 300 gallons per pick up. Hauling containers should be sturdy and seal completely. Appropriate containers will not show signs of excessive wear, cracks, holes, or be compromised in any way.
Recycled water may be used for vineyard, vegetable garden, and ornamental landscape irrigation. The water may be stored on site for use for up to four days. Recycled water cannot be hooked into your existing irrigation system. It must be applied with a watering can or through a hose and/or sprinkler connected to your storage container.
The approved hauling area extends outside of City limits and allows residents in Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Russian River Valley to access recycled water for irrigation purposes. In particular, the Mill Creek area, which has been severely impacted by water curtailments, can benefit from the use of recycled water for both vineyard and ornamental landscape irrigation. To view the hauling area map, please visit: http://www.cityofhealdsburg.org/DocumentCenter/View/5447.
Parties interested in self-hauling of recycled water for outdoor irrigation must complete training and a user agreement to obtain an approved permit. Please attend the scheduled August 5th training starting at 6:00pm at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (340 Foreman Lane) to receive instruction on how to properly haul and apply recycled water to your landscape. To receive an approved user agreement, attendees should bring a valid driver’s license and sealable container for transporting the water.
Please pre-register for the training by contacting Michael Tomita at (707) 431-3128 or mtomita@ci.healdsburg.ca.us.
