[ARCHIVED] Heat Wave: Cooling Center Open Labor Day Weekend

We are in for a heat wave in Healdsburg this Labor Day weekend: The Bay Area is forecast to have an Excessive Heat Warning Friday through Monday. As such, the City is urging residents to take precautions to prevent the adverse effects of extreme heat.

The City of Healdsburg is opening the Senior Center as a cooling center at 133 Matheson Street during the hours of 12 pm – 6 pm Friday, September 1st through Sunday, September 3rd. All residents are welcome to come to the Center during these hours to take a break from the heat.

The Center will provide an air-conditioned environment to escape the heat and cool water will be provided as well. No food will be available and the kitchen will not be available to cooling center visitors. The City asks that residents only bring food that is ready to eat and does not require refrigeration. No pets other than assistive animals for handicapped persons will be permitted.

The city is asking citizens to be proactive in planning to stay safe in the heat, take appropriate measures to protect their personal health. Here are a few tips:

  • Don’t leave anyone (including pets) in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
  • Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking more water than usual.
  • Limit outdoor, strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day.
  • Help elderly, children, the sick and pets stay cool.
